How to wrap words around images

Written by Malin on June 26th, 2007 -

I just wrote a little tiny tutorial on infektia.net on how you can make your text in your blog to wrap nicely around your images.

While surfing around Blogging with Desi Baba, I suddenly stumbled on a post called How to Wrap Words Around Images in Blog Posts where he explains how to add an image to a blog post and then how to get the image to wrap around it. So far so good. But the method he is using is horrible!

Go here to read it: How to wrap words around images.

How do I add a favicon?

Written by Malin on June 22nd, 2007 -

Some people have sent me this little question over email so I thought I could answer it in my blog…
There are several ways to add a favicon to your site, and I’ll cover two of them here!

Option one - The easy way

  • Create an image in your favorite image program or choose one you already have, just make sure it isn’t too big cause then it won’t look very nice…
  • Go to Chami.com’s FavIcon from Pics-service.
  • Browse and Generate.
  • The service will show you one non-animated and one animated favicon. Then follow the instructions on the site…

Option two - The trickier way (Well no, it’s not trickier than the other way actually)

  • Download the Windows Icon (ICO) file format Photoshop Plugin (if your Photoshop doesn’t already support .ico formats) and install it. Instrictions can be found at the download page.
  • Create an 16×16px image (since it’s quite small you can start with 50×50 and then resize it) and save it as “favicon” and don’t forget to choose “Windows Icon (ICO)” in the format field before you save it!
  • Upload the favicon.ico to your site (root perhaps?).
  • Add this line to your header - between the <head>-tags (or every page where you want the icon to appear):
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
  • Save and upload. Test it out. If it doesn’t work, try refreshing the page…

How to get free advertising on almost any blog

Written by Malin on June 19th, 2007 -

This tip is pretty obvious actually. To get some free advertising on almost any blog, you only have to sign up at all those community services (MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, etc) who provides widgets that everyone can put up on their blogs.

Create a catchy (and most importantly eye catching) and cool avatar. And then, if you’re logged in, your avatar will pop up on every site that has these widgets on them.

The downside with this method is that when someone clicks on your avatar, they will only get to your community page and not your site. That’s why you need a catchy and noticable avatar. Why not write your domain name on it?

As I was about to write this obvious tip, Kumiko, at Kumiko’s Cash Quest, posted about the same subject on her site; “How to get free advertising on top blogs“. However, her version is a little more evil, but I like it ;)

What is RSS?

Written by Malin on June 10th, 2007 -

RSSWhat the heck is RSS?

Newcomers to the blogosphere probably ask this question. And let me help you answer that question!

Here is a quote from the Wikipedia about RSS:

RSS (which, in its latest format, stands for “Really Simple Syndication”) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”, contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that’s easier than checking them manually.

Still quite don’t get it? Here is the best link for you. This site explains RSS in the Oprah way!
